Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones Review

Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones Review

The General Consensus

Skullcandy has been around for a while now and I’ve actually had the pleasure of owning these headphones back in the early 2000’s. I’ve since managed to step on them and break the headband but for the few years that I had them these were pretty cool headphones I must say.

The SCS-SCBP3.5’s actually fold down to become more portable and this is sort of a mixed blessing. They were definitely more portable and came in a cool ‘faux-leather’ carrying bag but they were also a little awkward to get on your head. Once you figured out how to lock them in place though this really wasn’t an issue.

Skullcandy is known for BASS and these headphones apparently had mini subwoofers in them or made it sound like there were mini subwoofers and all in all they did a pretty good job giving a better than normal bass response. The music overall was very crisp and clear and I really enjoyed using these headphones while I had them.

They’ve received pretty great reviews on places like Amazon.com as well with a 4 star rating out of over 350 customer reviews so let’s take a look at what other people are saying…

The Negative Reviews

As always I like to start with the negatives to give a better idea of what you should be looking for with any product.

The negative reviews on the Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones are almost all to do with the bass. People are comparing these to walmart subs etc… saying that the sound is terrible.

Let’s be realistic here, are you going to get a mind-blowing bass response for under $50? Hell no… I really feel that sometimes people go into purchases without having a clear and reasonable expectation of what they are buying.

The bass response isn’t as terrible as some people say IMO but if you’re really looking for high-quality than you may want to think about investing a little more money.

Aside from that there were a few people who had quality control issues and I think this may have been due to the “break-down” design that Skull-Candy uses. If you don’t need a pair of large headphones that are portable then I would recommend checking out some other designs that are more suited for home use.

The Positive Reviews

There were 170 5 star reviews for this product on Amazon.com and these reviewers echo my own sentiments about this product. Basically for under $50 you get a pretty great pair of portable headphones that are comfortable and sound pretty damn good!

A lot of people like the bass response and like me found that when you dialled it down just a little you could still get a great bass sound without interfering with the clarity of the highs and mids. Of course this is all going to depend on what sort of music you like to listen to as well… I was mainly rock with loud guitars and loud vocals so these worked great for me, for hip-hop or electronic music with really punching bass it might be a bit of a different story.

Overall reviewers have said that these headphones are quite comfortable although if you have really large earlobes or wear glasses then they may pinch after a while as they can be a little tight. For this reason though they do a great job of cancelling out external noise as well.

The Conclusion

Would we recommend the Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones?

Yes, but only if you have made sure that they are good for your uses, if you:

  • Need a full pair of headphones that are easily portable
  • Like a bit more bass in your mix
  • Don’t have unreal expectations from a $40 pair of headphones!

Then the Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones are probably a great fit!
